A Journey of remembrance - The story of Frederick Norman Ayles

"Journey of Remembrance" is an evocative and deeply personal art project that explores the life and legacy of my great-great-uncle, Frederick Norman Ayles. A 19-year-old gardener from Bromley, Kent, Frederick enlisted into a London regiment before being transferred into the South Lancashire Regiment to fight in the First World War. His brief but poignant journey in France and Belgium ended tragically on the 13th of November 1914, when he lost his life near the Ypres area. This project seeks to uncover and honour Frederick's story, which has remained largely unknown within our family, and to create a visual narrative that connects past and present through the landscape. 

This project also draws parallels between historical and modern conflicts, emphasizing the cyclical nature of war and its recurring themes. Frederick's experience of trench warfare, rapid advancements in military tactics and weaponry, and the young lives lost bear striking similarities to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. By juxtaposing these periods, "Journey of Remembrance" highlights the lessons of history and the need for continual efforts toward peace and understanding. The work serves as a reminder of how far we have come in over 110 years while also acknowledging our persistent challenges.
